The KickStart program uses Australian football as a vehicle for education, employment, health and participation outcomes for Indigenous people. The KickStart program and Championships provide further development opportunities for other parts of the football industry such as umpiring, coaching and administration with local Indigenous people engaged in these leadership positions for each team.
The focus of the Kickstart program’s mission has changed considerably since its inception in 2000, in the Far North Queensland region. Since those humble beginnings the program has grown from not just encouraging AFL participation but more importantly offering AFL as a vehicle to create personal and community change. AFL Cape York staff encourage participants to go to school, stay away from substance abuse and other drugs and discuss the negative affect violence is having in communities.
To complement our lifestyle program we have been able to develop a comprehensive participation pathway for both boys and girls at primary and secondary schooling levels.
