AFL Cape York House is proud to announce the return of Me. The Exhibition ‘Culture’, now in its second year, with a focus on culture. This year’s exhibition will take place on Saturday, 9 November 2024 at the Pullman International Cairns and will offer an inspiring showcase of student self-portraiture that delves into identity, culture, and the unique journey of each learner.
The inaugural exhibition in November 2023 was a rousing success, allowing the students of AFL Cape York House – For Boys and AFL Cape York House – For Girls to depict themselves as learners and share this with the Cairns community as well as their peers and families.
This year, over 74 students from AFL Cape York House will participate, each contributing a self-portrait that reflects their personal journey and pride in their heritage.
Me. The Exhibition ‘Culture’ provides a platform for AFL Cape York House students to explore their identities through photography. In its second year of exhibition, viewers are invited to witness the transformative journey of young individuals who travel from remote communities to boarding, leaving behind the familiar embrace of home and family.
The students spend over 40 weeks of the year studying and living in Cairns, away from family and community – no small feat for young people aged 12-18. At the heart of this exhibition is the celebration of self-identity and pride, showcasing each individual’s uniqueness as they forge their paths. Culture is a vital thread that weaves through their experiences, acting as both an anchor and a guide.
Each student will have a statement displayed alongside their portrait at the exhibition, describing the intent of the artwork and how their cultural heritage shapes their identity.
AFL Cape York House like to do activities with their young people that strengthen their leadership, encourage collaboration, and make them proud of who they are. As they navigate the challenges of adapting to a new environment, these young learners remain firmly connected to cultural teachings, ideas and foundations to embody the mantra “This is me.”
Me. The Exhibition ‘Culture’ will open officially from 11am at The Pullman International Cairns on Saturday 9 November and will be free for the public to attend until 5pm.
AFL Cape York House invites the Cairns community to come and celebrate the powerful narratives of these young people as they express their growth, resilience, and pride in their culture.
