ME. The Exhibition

The Exhibition was an exciting initiative – in a way we can celebrate our Boys & Girls in a Unique & Individual way. Each Young Person from AFLCYH’s had a SELF-PORTRAIT – that contained meaning ABOUT THEM. The Portraits were spectacular. NO PHOTO WAS THE SAME; BECAUSE NO YOUNG PERSON IS THE SAME. The Event has over 200 people in attendance from our Young People, Families, Staff, Teachers, Key Partners & Stakeholders as well as members of the Public. The Exhibition was formally opened in a ceremony by 2023 House Captains, Yehusha & Walter, as well as Cultural Dance. A quote from Yehusha’s Opening Speech “The ME. Exhibition is a way for us Young People to represent ourselves with the things that make us uniquely us.” The sense of PRIDE our Boys & Girls had in viewing their portraits was at times emotional. A BIG THANK to Amanda Black (Boys Teacher) for the Idea & Vision and then an extension to our Education Teams who were extremely prominent in piecing together the “HOW”. We would also like to acknowledge AFLCY Partners in Adllins Media & Cardzilla – for producing the quality portraits that were displayed was nothing short of Outstanding & Professional.

Our Culture

Dancerites 2023

The culmination of the AFL Cape York Cultural Dance for 2023 saw both our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Dance Groups light up the dance circle at the Sydney Opera House this November. Both groups placed in the top 8 with the Aboriginal Dancers placing runners up overall. The young people were extremely proud to showcase their culture and communities and all performances could not be faulted. Being the first competitive event that our Dance groups have been part of, we see this strengthening our cultural programs to help build confidence pride in culture and character for future years to come. The Dance teams were greeted back home with a guard of honour which ended with a final corroboree in the Cairns Airport terminal for 2023.
