AFL Cape York students gear up for art exhibition

THE young people of AFL Cape York House are gearing up for their art exhibition this weekend, where they will showcase self-portraits to the people of Cairns.

Me. The Exhibition will open at the Hilton Cairns this Saturday, November 11, following an Acknowledgement of Country at 10 am.

The AFL Cape York House captains, one boy and one girl, will then open the exhibition to the public and it will close at 4 pm.

As part of the program at AFL Cape York House, the students, who board at the facility while attending Cairns secondary schools, have experimented with self-portraiture in order to capture this point in their journey as learners.

AFL Cape York House – For Boys teacher Amanda Black said the young people come to them already strong from their families and communities and the boarding space supports the young people to navigate the secondary school learning process and platforms.

value adds by supporting the young people to navigate secondary school learning process and platfroms.

“They are so strong just even to come away from their communities and families to study in Cairns, and we want them to highlight their strength,” she said.

“Some of our young people have never been exposed to certain subjects, like drama, and their whole world opens up when they are given the opportunity to do something they’ve never tried.

“This visual element makes it all the more fantastic and we are really excited to showcase it.”

Each student will have a statement displayed alongside their portrait at the exhibition, describing the intent of the artwork and unpacking their learning journeys.

Me. The Exhibition is a free event and AFL Cape York House encourages the community to come along and support its young people.
